National Occupational Standards

National Occupational Standards (NOS) set out the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to perform a role competently. Each standard is expressed through statements of performance and the evidence needed to demonstrate that competence.
NOS describes the key activities carried out within a role and the different contexts in which the work is performed. They act as a benchmark for quality and consistency across occupations.

They are used to:

 - Define and promote good practice across the construction industry

 - Provide a clear statement of competence that combines skills, knowledge, and understanding

 - Support managers in workforce planning, performance management, and quality assurance

 - Offer a structured framework for training and professional development

 - Form the foundation for qualifications such as National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Scottish Vocational
Qualifications (SVQs), and other vocationally related certifications
